CSCAA and FIU Host College National Open Water Championships

 

Hosted by Florida International University, the CSCAA’s 2022 College Open Water National Championship took place at Biscayne Bay in Miami, Florida.

The College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) hosted the College National Open Water Championships today in Miami, Florida. Nearly 250 student-athletes participated in the 5000m race with more than 40 colleges and universities representing all three NCAA Divisions.

Samantha Barany, the Executive Director of the CSCAA, had this to say about the event:

“After a great stretch of open water championships hosted by The University of Kansas, we’d like to thank Florida International University and FIU Head Coach, Randy Horner, for hosting the 2022 event. We’d also like to recognize the Miami-Dade County for their partnership. We look forward to building upon this event in the future, and we are excited to see everyone back at Biscayne Bay in 2023!”

After planning, organizing and executing a fantastic race experience, Coach Randy Horner invites everyone back in 2023:

"Open water swimming is such a blast! We are fortunate to have access to such a beautiful race course, and I am especially grateful to the FIU administration, FIU staff and the FIU student-athletes for making this event such a success. I am eager to begin planning the 2023 event!”


Men’s Team Results

  3. Villanova University (2:49.36)

The Cincinnati Bearcats trio of Ido Gal (54:46), Alex Gonzalez (55:31), and Kevin Leibold (56:57) finished in first place with a combined time of 2:47.14. Coming in second place was the Northwestern Wildcats group of Ryan King (55:37), Alex Ispas (56:35) and Ben Forbes (56:55) with a combined time of 2:49:07. Rounding out the top three was the Villanova Wildcats team of Charles Hinckley (55:31), Patrick Casey (56:56) and Aubrey Bowles (57:09), finishing with a total time of 2:49:36.

"I am really proud of our Bearcats distance crew winning the team title! My assistant coach, Joey Ferreri, trained them well and has extensive knowledge of open water racing, which helped prepare our team. Thank you to the CSCAA for hosting a great experience for all the athletes!” said Mandi Commons-DiSalle, Head Coach at University of Cincinnati.

Women’s Team Results

  1. Rice University (2:55.25)

  2. Northwestern University (2:58.30)

  3. Villanova University (2:58.35)

The Rice Owls trio of Ella Dyson (58:08), Amelia Kane (58:30) and Shannon Campbell (58:46) finished in first place with a combined time of 2:55.25. Coming in second place was the Northwestern Wildcats group of Lola Mull (58:11), Danielle Nowaski (60:05) and MacKenzie Lanning (60:13) with a combined time of 2:58:30. Rounding out the top three was the Villanova Wildcats team of Kaitlin Gravell (58:17), Brenna McLaughlin (60:03) and Audrey Pastorek (60:14), finishing with a total time of 2:58:35.

"The sun was shining on the Rice Owls today! We were fortunate that Ella, Amelia and Shannon got out in the lead pack and stayed there. They all competed great and very proud of Ella’s race to the finish for gold,” said Seth Huston, Head Coach at Rice University.

Founded in 1922, the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) is the first professional association of college coaches in the United States.  The CSCAA is dedicated to serving and providing leadership for the advancement of the sport of swimming and diving at the collegiate level. The CSCAA works to

  • protect, promote and expand competitive intercollegiate swimming and diving programs;

  • recognize outstanding achievements by coaches, swimmers and divers;
